Of course, Taylor was torn and confused. I didnât blame her. Iâd not settled down either despite having been with many fine she-wolves over the years.
âFinding the right mate is something you tend to just know. All those Iâve spoken with who have taken a mate somehow just knew deep down that it was the right one. Iâm yet to get that feeling with anyone yet,â I shared as I folded my arms.
âDid you explore a lot too?â she asked softly as she turned to stare at me with those sweet emerald eyes.
I felt that odd pull in my chest at her gaze, and I averted my own as I sighed.
âYeah, I did. You know I left my Pack as a teen when the old Alpha was overthrown. The new guy was a dictator, so a lot of us bailed,â I said, and she nodded. âI met with many other shifters and females, a few other lone wolves, but none of them were who I wanted for life,â I continued.
âIâve heard some wolves take on other shifter mates,â she noted.
âYep, it isnât massively common, and almost never happens in a Pack environment.â
âYeah, itâd be hard to meet other shifters and such really,â she murmured, and I nodded.
Iâd left with quite a few others from my original Pack, all of us deciding to become lone wolves rather than live under his rule. Being a lone wolf had its drawbacks though. You didnât have the protection you had in a Pack, and finding places to settle down outside of Pack territories could be interesting. Lone wolves were not looked well upon by Packs, as we were considered rejects normally. My parents had remained with the Pack, disowning me when I refused to bow down to the horrid male who wanted to tax us heavily. It was no big loss in my mind since weâd not had the greatest relationship anyway.
But Lawrence had befriended me as a teen when I was working odd jobs and learning how to survive as a lone wolf. Iâd gained contacts in shifter communities and knew witches too, all of which he found helpful. Iâd learned about his more traditional Pack, how the Alphas came from one line of what was considered royal, pure blood, and how they taught their own children out on the ranch. They were still permitted to travel and go to town, but many of the Pack chose to rarely leave the giant ranch, instead being quite content with their farm lives, mustering cattle, working with horses, and doing odd things to get by.
Lawrence had made me the offer of joining his Pack and becoming his beta after several years of working for him. He spent a lot of time working away from the Pack with his Sheriff position, leaving his son in charge while he was away. Iâd assisted him since I had no Pack ties, but when heâd asked, Iâd happily accepted just before my twentieth birthday. With his work, he was
